Hi All,

How long should you allow before introducing males that have been wether (by the vet) back into the main female alpaca herd to act as guards?
Has anyone had any problems with either the wethers or the girls, especially the pregnant ones?

Cheers

Janet, Our experience is not so good.  We have wethered a stud male and left him about two months before putting him back with the herd of females and I thought he could be their protector.       He was fine at first but then started to try and mate the girls and I mean by this getting them down and mating them. So unfortuneately that did not work and he is back with the other studs.    We also have a pet one and he was castrated as soon as he could be and he is the same with the girls, so cannot mix as I do not like the girls to be continually mated.  Also Guacho our orphan who was castrated early goes down behind girls and has hip movement.
Here it has only worked with one who was also castrated as a wether early and never showed any inclination.  Our vet says often although it is not in the hormones it is  often still in their head, especially if they have been a stud already.   So that is difficult, you have to run them seperate.    Joy

Janet,

We have had no trouble with boys that have been wethered. These are boys being wethered because they are suitable for pets/guardians/lawnmowers.  We have put them straight back in after wethering. The girls sort them out quick smart but we have never had any trouble.  They dont tend to bother the girls are are good to hsave as companions/guardians etc.

The only trouble is with a stud male who has been wethered. In these cases I would never put him back in with the girls as he retains strong urges/tendencies and cant help himself.  We have a male who was a stud and has been wethered (by others, not us annd bought by me as a guardian) He is a fab guardian but cannot be in with girls.  We tried it, was awful for the girls and us trying to get him out quickly.  I believe all males that have worked as studs and then are wethered should not be put back in with girls as they retain their stud male tendencies.

cheers
Michelle
