Halters
Jan 26th, 2009, 2:20pm

Hi we are preparing to buy two little boys (8months old and 12 months old) and have no past experience. Can anyone recommend the type of halter and lead we should get so that we can training them to walk on the lead fairly easily. Also we'd love to find a really easy to understand book about halter training. Thanks very much.

Hi

I would recommend Marty McGee-Bennett's book The Camelid Companion. I think it is an excellent introduction to haltering and also to understanding and working with your alpacas.

We use Marty's halters as we have found them to be best in terms of fit, comfort for the alpacas, and durability. There are a couple of Australian distributors - let me know if you want to find them but can't.

cheers
Helen

Marty also makes a DVD Alpaca Training and Handling which is a good way to start.
